ETYMOLOGY

Three major terms are used internationally when referring to the concept of a structure, which processes fish. These terms are fish plant, fish factory and fish processing plant. With ‘fish plant’ being the most widely used term, followed by ‘fish factory’ and then ‘fish processing plant’.

The earliest term of all, fish factory, surfaced back in the nineteenth century and started becoming more popular in the 1880’s. The second term, ’fish plant’, was coined probably in the early twentieth century, around 1920, and rapidly rose to popularity with time. Lastly, in the 1930’s the third term sprang forth: ‘fish processing plant’.

Apart from those three, several other minor synonyms to ‘fish plant’ emerged notably, fish processing facility, fish processing establishment, fish processing factory, and fish factory. It is worth noting that the popularity of a synonym in the fisheries sector, varies with regions.

DEFINITION an establishment, enterprise, factory, plant, facility or institution located near water bodies, inland or on fishing vessels, carrying out activities related to fish or fisheries products preparation (cleaning, scaling or cutting up), decoration (fish marking, tagging, etc.), preservation ( icing, freezing, irradiating, smoking, salting, cooking, etc.), or packaging (canning, bottling, or wrapping).
