Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing) mean any fishing that defiles fisheries laws in force, or occurs outside the reach of fisheries laws and regulations including those laws and rules adopted at the regional and international level. – It is illegal, meaning, it refers to fishing without a license, fishing with prohibited gear, above the gross tonnage of the vessel, fishing over a quota, fishing in a closed region, or the fishing of prohibited species. – It is unreported, meaning, vessel crew are not reporting, or misreporting (underreporting) their catch (even if the vessel is licensed to catch that species) to relevant authorities in contravention of national laws and regulations or reporting procedures set out by relevant regional fisheries management organization. . – It is unregulated, meaning, occurs in areas or for fish stocks for which there are no applicable conservation or management laws and where such fishing activities are conducted in a manner inconsistent with the conservation of living marine resources under international law, or occurring in an RFMO-managed area and conducted by vessels without nationality, or by those flying the flag of a State or fishing entity that is not party to the RFMO. | ||||||
