Abundance Index: A quantitative measure of fish density or abundance, usually as a time series. It is a relative measure of the size of a population or sub-unit of the population, such as a year class. It is usually measured as number (or weight) of fish caught per standard unit of fishing effort.

An abundance index can be specific to an area or to a segment of the population (e.g., large fish), or it can refer to abundance stock-wide; the index can reflect abundance in numbers or in weight (biomass). Most abundance indices currently used by the SCRS are based on standardized CPUE data, although fishery-independent abundance indices based on scientific surveys have also been used. Typically, abundance indices are in relative units (as opposed to measuring absolute abundance), and simply indicate relative changes in abundance over time (SCRS, 2000, October).
