By then, fish culturing techniques had not yet been discovered. <span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">By then, fishery only meant the capture of fish, and was used as a synonym for fishing. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">With the advent of fish culture techniques, a new sector was born &#8211;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> culture fishery<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Nowadays, it may mean an industry, a fish stock, or an activity, to name a few. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishterm.com\/term_diction.php?k=9,e$Fishery\">Fishery\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">in its general sense of an activity <\/span><span class=\"ff2\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">can be defined as an organised effort by humans to <span style=\"color: #008000;\">culture<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #808000;\">capture<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">conserve<\/span> fish <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">or other aquatic species. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If we were to break down this definition, we will obtain the following pioneer branches of fishery.<\/span><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"t m0 xc hb y18 ff3 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #008000; text-decoration: underline;\">Fish Culture (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">culture fishery)<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"ff2\">\u2013 the act of raising the maximum productivity of <\/span>fish or other edible aquatic products to satisfy human needs. This subsector is generally known as <em>aquaculture<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"t m0 xc hb y1b ff3 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #808000; text-decoration: underline;\">Fish Capture (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">capture fishery or fishing<\/span>)<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"ff2\">\u2013 the act of\u00a0<\/span>catching or harvesting fish with the help of fishing gear like fishing hooks, pots, nets, etc. This refers to the <em>fishing<\/em> sub-sector<\/li>\n<li class=\"t m0 xc hb y1d ff3 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Fish Preservation<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"ff2\">\u2013 a branch of fishery that deals with the scientific <\/span>method of preserving fish and other edible aquatic products to prevent spoilage. These set of preservation techniques birthed the forth sub-sector of fishery:<strong><em><span style=\"color: #339966;\"> fish preservation<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The above branches are the <strong>three<\/strong> most popular branches of fishery. However, fish-related subsectors have increased over the years to yield three more major fishery subsectors: .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Origin of fish processing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fish is a highly perishable product! \ud83d\ude25 \u00a0 You will bear with me that when the catch becomes more than the fishers can preserve or conserve,\u00a0they will have no choice but to process the excess fish into more useful derived and by-products, to be used by other agriculture sub-sectors. This branch deals with the processing of fish and other aquatic products and is popularly known as <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><strong>fish processing<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Origin of fishmongering:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is generally agreed that small-scale subsistence fishery industries may just focus on satisfying the nutritional needs of the fisher. When it comes to large-scale industrial fisheries the scope becomes wider. These fish and their processed products are not just for the fishers or fish farmers alone. They are placed on both local and international markets to meet the needs of more people.<\/p>\n<p>This is where another set of stakeholders, the fish sellers and buyers, come into the fishery chain. They, together with their commercial fishery activities, have yielded over the years, what is called: <strong><span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">fishmongering<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Now, the goal of fishmongering is not to culture, or to capture, or to preserve, or process, but to ensure that these protein-rich resources reach the targeted consumers worldwide.<button class=\"rank-math-content-ai-tooltip\">Shorten with AI<\/button><\/p>\n<p><strong>Origin of fisheries management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It came a point in time where fishing technology advanced such that the fisheries resources began to become exhausted. Then fisheries scienticed starting looking for techniques and government policies to ensure sustainable fishing. These set of management strategies with a view to sustain fish stocks is termed fishery management. To ensure sustainable capture fisheries, it has to be managed properly. A new subsector was birthed: <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><em><strong>fisheries management<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>So, if we add up the three emerging sub-sectors to the 3 aforementioned popular ones, we can rewrite these sub-sectors of fishery into 6 main sub-sectors. It is the second most popular and fastest branch of fisheries, after fishing. Fish farming is subdivided into many sub-sectors and types, classified holistically in \u27a1 this article on the branches of fish farming.<\/p>\n<p>Some people consider fish farming to be synonymous with aquaculture. However, this was true in the past when aquaculture only meant <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em>fish cultivation<\/em><\/span>. Since fish farming strictly means the cultivation of fish, and aquaculture nowadays doesn&#8217;t only cultivate fish, aquaculture is no longer a synonym for fish farming in many countries across the globe. Fish Preservation<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fish preservation is <span class=\"ff2\">one of the main branches of fishery<\/span> that deals with the scientific methods used in preserving fish and other edible aquatic products to prevent spoilage. Some of these methods include salting, smoking, sun-drying, icing, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Fish preservation originated far before the 1980&#8217;s as an activity. One of the earliest books published on this subject is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.cm\/books\/edition\/Fish_Preservation_and_Refrigeration\/ct8AAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=%22fish+preservation%22&amp;pg=PA10&amp;printsec=frontcover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fish Preservation and Refrigeration by J. The term gained more popularity as years went by, right up to around the 1980\u2019s, when the term \u2018<em>fish processing<\/em>\u2019 started declining in frequency, probably due to it being replaced with new synonyms like <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">\u2018<em>seafood processing<\/em><\/span>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, we consider <em>seafood processing to be a broader concept than fish processing, meaning not just the processing of fish but goes further to include all seafood in general (crabs,\u00a0 etc.).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fish processing sector can be subdivided into other subsectors of fishery based on some criteria.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">A. Based on the changes the raw fish undergoes after their capture, fish processing is subdivided into:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Fish handling<\/span>: preliminary processing of raw fish;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Manufacture of fish products<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">B. Fishmongering<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fishmongering is <span class=\"ff2\">one of the main branches of fishery<\/span> that deals with the trade of fish and their products.\u00a0 Stakeholders of this sector are called fishmongers. Fishmongers can be wholesalers or retailers and are trained at selecting and purchasing, boning, filleting, displaying, handling, gutting, merchandising and selling their products.
