Today, we can see that &#8216;fisheries&#8217; is slightly more popular as a noun than &#8216;fishery&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. &#8216;Fishery&#8217; is most often the adjective, while &#8216;fisheries&#8217; is the noun form<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>&#8216;Fishery&#8217;<\/em> <\/span>is mostly used as an adjective, while &#8216;<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\"><em>fisheries&#8217;<\/em> <\/span>most often stands alone as a noun.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the examples below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>As adjective<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8216;Building a fishery vessel&#8217;<\/em>, has become preferred and more popular\u00a0 than saying <em>&#8216;Building a fisheries vessel&#8217; in global use<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As standalone noun<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using them as standalone nouns, after researching (Google n-gram analysis), we noticed that nowadays, a phrase ending in &#8216;<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em>&#8230; fisheries.<\/em><\/span>&#8216; is more frequent than that with &#8216;<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em>&#8230; fishery.<\/em><\/span>&#8216;.\u00a0 Which goes to support the fact that as nouns, &#8216;fisheries&#8217; is more popular than &#8216;fishery&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"> Though &#8216;<em>fisheries sector&#8217; <\/em>is used across the world, using <em>fishery<\/em> as an adjective in the word fishery sector is more popular and grammatically better than using &#8216;<em>fisheries sector&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0 If I have to use a term as an adjective, I will prefer &#8216;fishery&#8217; to &#8216;fisheries&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: terminal, monaco, monospace;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation<\/span>: We can conclude after analysing graphs A, B, and D, that <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em>fishery<\/em> <\/span>as an adjective originated earlier and is more frequently used than <span style=\"color: #993366;\">fisheries<\/span>. For instance, in graph D, &#8216;<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">fishery vessel<\/span>&#8216; (blue line) was already in use before 1840, while &#8216;<span style=\"color: #993366;\">fisheries vessel<\/span>&#8216; (red line) only originated around the 1880&#8217;s. Nowadays, &#8216;<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">fishery vessel<\/span>&#8216; is more popular than &#8216;<span style=\"color: #993366;\">fisheries vessel<\/span>&#8216;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exceptions and Notes<\/span>: However, if you do an n-gram analysis of the terms &#8216;fishery <span class=\"fontstyle0\">management&#8217; and &#8216;fisheries management&#8217;, you will notice that &#8216;fisheries management&#8217; turns out to be <strong>more frequent<\/strong> than &#8216;fishery management&#8217;. It is true also for &#8216;fishery sector&#8217;, &#8216;fisheries sector&#8217;,\u00a0 &#8216;fishery production&#8217;, and &#8216;fisheries production&#8217;. NB: These trends are global, and may vary from one sub-region to another slightly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Are there contexts where fishery and fisheries can be used interchangeably?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>! This will spare you from getting into the ambiguity we experienced in our study excerpt above.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Try to be as clear as possible when writing:<\/span> It will make no sense to use fishery ambiguously in your sentences if your readers won&#8217;t be able to understand you. This means your message won&#8217;t get across to your target audience as intended.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Consult your audience population&#8217;s word choice before writing<\/span>. You may know this by reading fisheries publications from that region or by acquainting with their regional fisheries commission&#8217;s terminology.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Use &#8216;fishery&#8217;\/&#8217;fisheries&#8217; as an adjective:<\/span> To avoid ambiguity when using the term \u2018<em>fishery\/fisheries<\/em>\u2019, use fishery\/fisheries as an adjective and introduce another word. In the fisheries sector, this jargon ambiguity exists. At times, persistent controversies amongst fisheries experts may require a convention (often international) to disambiguate confusing synonyms.
